ADHD is getting ridiculous. I've been diagnosed by "peers" with it, and I'll admit at times I wonder if I do suffer from the "Disease", but after an admittedly small amount of research, I've come to the conclusion that being diseased is the latest in a trend of "Woe is me-America". It's always been around. You get attention and sympathy from being less fortunate than the norm. However, now it has evolved past the point of "Emo", where you are free to dispute someone's apathy towards life, and you are generally looked down upon by everyone but your friends who are in the same position as you; it is now at a multi-layered problem, the one I'm addressing being ADD/HD.
Being ADHD means you're different. You're not like the average person! You're person+! Congratulations! So, be sure to flaunt that fact to everyone you meet every time you have the slightest random outburst, and let people know how different you are. Also, you should probably mention quite often that you've forgotten to take your medication today. Seriously, 90% of the people I've met who claim ADD/HD seem to love mentioning at least once a day that they have forgotten to take their medication, and it's normally in some apologetic form after a joke falls flat; "Sorry I just (insert supposed random, but completely predictable action that wasn't funny here), but I haven't taken my Ritalin today." I haven't really decided if they like having a supposed disease or what, but it's most definintly a great excuse for their behavior, at least they seem to think so.
Here's where the "Admittedly small amount of research" comes in: Did you know that the industry producing Adderoll and Ritalin, the main ADD/HD meds used, has more than Quadrupled in the past five years? It went from a 700 Million to 3+ Billion dollar industry from 2000-2005. Most people think ADD/HD means your brain is doing something too fast, this is simply not the case, it is in fact the opposite. ADD/HD is a diease where the seratonin(sp.?) reuptake inhibitors don't release the chemicals at a proper speed, the become trapped in chambers of the brain. Think of it as a train in a subway tunnel. It's supposed to be going fast enough that you have time to experience one thought between each destination; instead it is going slow enough that instead of having that one thought, you have five and aren't even concious of what the first thought was. What ADD/HD meds do is speed up the process so that the seratonin is released normally and they have the one thought in place of the five. The problem comes in where ADD/HD -is- a disorder, but it does -not- affect as much of the population as is being prescribed mediciine. So, what happens when a non-ADD/HD patient is prescribed medicine? The suffer from ADD/HD symptoms because since the medicine speeds up the process that the reuptake inhibitors perform, the child successfully completes one though, and then moves on to the next 5 immdediatley. Since the process of the reuptake inhibitors is not easily observed, most doctors will settle for one of two things:
1. A hyper child screaming in their office
2. A parent demanding ADD/HD meds to fix their broken kid
And Voila! Ritalin.
Now, I have heard arguements that ADD/HD is a result of the disintigration of the family unit as a whole leading to more watching of television which in turn causes the disease ADD/HD. TV doesn't cause diseases (No, I don't care about any actual diseases TV may cause that are siezure related), bad parenting does. Sort of, you see I've come to the conclusion (This is completely disputable, please for God's sake don't comment saying I've claimed my words fact) that, yes, the "Family Unit" has become more of a "Family... some funny antithesis of "Unit"" and as a result, that means parents aren't taking as much time to pay attention to their offspring, which in turn leads to children without any focused goals. When I say "No focused goals." I mean, they are freaking children, we're talking 5-12 year olds that aren't being given any interests by their parents, so instead they seek their own interests. Do you know what kid's are interested in? Everything. Dinosaurs, being a doctor, Power Rangers, the change in the sofa, the dirty condom in their brother's bedroom floor, whatever it is, they soak it up, and it makes an impression on them. Kid's don't have much drive to do anything, however, and without any sort of pressure from an adult to stay on track with something, they quickly lose focus and move onto another interest. That's a normal part of being young, liking Superman one day, and your deceased Great Grandfather the WWII veteran the next. What's not normal is no values or interests from family members ever being impressed upon children. Traditonally, your dad is supposed to make you think the Redskins are the best football team, and because you seek his approval, you stay with that for so long that you're just as convinced as he is, thus creating an interest in football, making you the eventual capt. of the team. See how it works? The "problem, and I'll explain why that's in quotes, is that kids are having to develop interests on their own, and they simply can't pull it off a vast majority of the time. Personally, I like video games, and most things in the geek culture appeal to me. Outside that however I have no viable skills. I never watched sports, I have no idea how to hunt or fish, I can't sew or cook. I was never taught to, so I picked up the things that required no skill, and catered to imagination, something children have in abundance. You'll notice most geeks are rather immature, hence their offbeat, silly, humor; which they share in common with..? Children. See how it works?
Now, after much adieu, a point.(Most) Parents are far too busy trying to become happy with their lives, too much so that they can't waste time rearing offspring, and the only values we recieve are the ones we get for doing something wrong, not right, such as "You were smoking, that's bad." not "You told the truth about hitting my car, that shows character." As a result, kids lack direction in life, and they change interests at an exponential rate from being 8 and wanting to be a fireman, then doctor, then teacher; all the way to being 16 and you can't focus in school because you're thinking about everything else going on in your life, because you were never instilled with how important school was to a sufficient extent, and so you're thinking about how fun the party that night will be, or about that girl you can't stop thinking about, or any topic that you decided for yourself was more important than whatever you "should" be focusing on. I use should in quotes because it's up to you whether you should be focused on school or who you're getting drunk and screwing that night. Parents solution to this problem is Ritalin/Adderoll. My kid is hyper, my son is violent, my daughter talks too much too quickly; and since ADD/HD by definition to the layman is being hyper and annoying, obviously the kid has a disease. Children have always been annoying, always been hyper, always had no focus. It is not the job of medication to fix a parent's lack of effort in their relationship with their kids. The quadrupling of the Ritalin/Adderoll industries profit margin is a result of lazy parenting, not an epidemic of the "disease(s)" ADD/HD.

my thoughts
Good post brent. Im sort of in the same position as you regarding ADD. You've raised some good questions about "being different" and the role of the parent in growth and development. Heres what i think and please tell me if im misinterprating you in any way.Generally, i believe that what we see in society today is all a result of the absence and rejection of one very crucial and important principle for growth and self-fulfillment: Work BEFORE pleasure. If we are to accomplish anything in our lives, we MUST manage our time and set our priorities. However in today's culture, this is very hard to do given the endless types of possible distractions we face in this age of mass idiotization. Therfore, it is extremely important that we balance time and energy and ask ourselves: What am I here to do?
Society has created material pleasure into an ideal. Now Im not saying that material pleasure isnt something to strive for. Im saying that it should not be the main focus of our lives. In my experience, this principle can either make or break if one doesnt follow it since in the end. Its those who work hard and are fully motivated who end up achieving their goals.
This principle has become radically distorted and is hardly ever shown in the media and entertainment industry as opposed to the japanese who do in fact show hard work and determination to be good characteristics. There are many examples of this in anime. However, in America, its all become a hedonistic/materialistic breeding ground that entraps us into false ideals. You see it everywhere; movie and music stars being portrayed as gods, showing off their wealth; from rap stars portraying women as objects of sexuality. It has become more important for us to know who is currently dating Brad Pitt then to know how many people have died in Iraq. In a way we all try to escape reality. We want to live movie star lives and drive fancy cars and date gorgeous girls/guys. The problem is that they should not be an END to themselves. For most people that however has become an end. The human soul yearns for more than just material pleasure. No wonder so many movie and music stars die of drug overdoses. They are slowly learning this fact. A fact that had been so distorted their false ideals.
Now, whats the real cause of all of this?
"choice is an illusion created by those with power" - the merovingian from matrix reloaded
If you've seen the matrix trilogy it is very interesting to view the movies in light of the merovingian's comment because Neo NEVER transcended the matrix physically or even mentally...it was spiritually. He did not know figure this out until the final minutes of revolutions.
Society has become so ignorant that they cannot even tell the source. What is really to blame is not the ignorance itself but the cause of the ignorance. Ignorance is something that will always exist. However, the causes of it are easily idenifiable and can be corrected. And what is the cause? Big business of course. They are the ones who breed it. They CONTROL IT. Through their endless marketing and advertising of not only material products but ALSO ideals, behaviours, and various ways of thinking that spawns the epitemy of mass manipulation. So you see, its bad to be ignorant, however its even worse to spread it to others which is something that big business is aiming to do. Why? Profit and control.
Now all of this leads to the point that im going to make...
I dont completely agree that: "TV doesn't cause diseases...bad parenting does."
The reason is this...
First, its already been shown that TV does in fact affect the attention span of children. Think about it. In the span of over an hour of watching TV, a child's mind is constantly being bombarded by thousands of visual stimuli from endless channel surfing. No wonder our minds get so bored when we face the "real world."
.....AHHHHHHHH IVE exceeded the maximum character limit....ill finish this on another post

Re: my thoughts
Well, so far you've gone in a completely different direction from what I was getting at, however, you've brought up some good points.I don't really buy into the media being an excuse for people's stupidity. People are going to be idiots and do unwise things regardless of what the object of their ignorance is. I've said it before and I'll say it again; If a person isn't provided with one outlet to be a moron, such as claiming they are in love with Justin Timberlake and they wish to have his children because his music speaks to their soul, then they will find other ways to be just as stupid that may not include the media. In either case, they are still going to be dumbasses, just dumbasses sans Justin Timberlake. At least with the media we can say "Oh, you enjoy wathcing Laguna Beach? Well thanks for letting me know so I can stop caring about your opinion's and respecting you." Without television, music, and movies, all but the most expert people at reading others would be constantly caught off guard by who actually matters and who doesn't. And for the record, it -is- fact that people who enjoy Justin Timberlake and Laguna Beach -do not- matter, don't be fooled by MTV and their demographic studies.
TV makes a dent in kids, I'm not going to say it doesn't, but by and large parents are the problem. As for society and it's materialistic tendencies: Duh. America has been around longer than the 200+ years we've been told. America is a victim of Country-Reincarnation. It's no secret that we are the new Roman Empire, I'm not claiming rights to that idea, and anyone who didn't know that, go ahead and sit down for Laguna Beach, it's on in 5. Material cravings are not a new idea introduced with mass media, it's been around since material meant sheep. I'm not going to blame Jay-Z for the shallow minded Tiffany's and Britney's and Jason's of the world, these bubble-headed teenagers-adults are just the newest model in a breed that's always been around. A Model-T is still a car, and before that was the horse and buggy, just think of the invention of the cart being the same as invention of material want and you'll follow the same train of thought. They both started a long time ago, and changed with the era, but it's still around and learning smarter ways to do what it's always done. The cars go faster, and the possesions become more readily available.

Re: my thoughts
Yes, parents are to blame however they are NOT the only ones responsible. "It takes an entire village to raise a child" as they say. Someone cannot just blame their parents for all their problems. And also, you say that "People are going to be idiots and do unwise things regardless of what the object of their ignorance is...If a person isn't provided with one outlet to be a moron...they will find other ways to be just as stupid" Are you suggesting that morons will always stay morons? How can you define someone to be a moron just by what shows they watch on TV?
And also... "all but the most expert people at reading others would be constantly caught off guard by who actually matters and who doesn't."
This comment seems to suggest a survival of the fittest philsophy. So do you really believe mass media manipulation to be unethical? Ur also creating this category of "people who dont matter." What other qualifications put u under that category besides Laguana Beach?
And as for the whole materialism issue...
What i can gather from what ur saying is this...
1. Materialism has existed ever since man came into being.
2. Material want is within man's nature.
3. The only thing different between now and then is the availability and frequency of "stuff."
Now my question is this:
Just because materialsim exists, SHOULD we just except it even when it clearly crosses ethical boundries?
I mean, genocide, stealing, adultery all exist. But does that mean they should?
I believe materialism is ok just as long as it doesnt present any ethical or moral problems for you AND OTHERS.
This is off topic sorta but i really wanna "express" what i feel:
All this shit going on today is all a result of one thing: Freedom of choice and expression. We are all raised to believe that we can do anythign we want. EVEN IN LAW as soon as u turn 18, ur free from ur parents control.
There is NO SUCH THING as absolute freedom. But a lot of people are just to ignorant to realize this...

I am writing after reading only a few sentences of what you said. Pretty much everything I said in reply was jest. If you couldn't tell the difference between my writing style in that and my average discussion style, I am doing something wrong.January 24 2006, 12:10:53 UTC 6 years ago
